May blog 1.0

What do I wish I had done differently at the beginning of the year?

I should have been a stickler about my rules for receiving consequences. I also think I'll change them slightly for the upcoming year.

Old Rules For Receiving Consequences (pretty much nonexistent)
  1. When you break a rule, you will get a consequence
  2. You will receive your consequence silently
  3. You may discuss your consequence with the teacher after class
  4. If you disrupt class when you get a consequence, you will receive a more severe consequence.

New Rules For Receiving Consequences (teach, re-teach, and teach again)
  1. When you break a rule, you will get a consequence
  2. You will receive your consequence silently
  3. If you disrupt class when you get a consequence, you will receive a more severe consequence and I contact your parent

I'm not willing to entertain complaints or arguments about consequences during class or after class, and I'm not going to be responsible for a child being late to their next class.

"Discipline"
Why the parent contact? I definitely did NOT use the parent leverage card to my full advantage. When parents are responsive, their "discipline" has a huge impact on student behavior.
