June Blog 1.0: Enseñar es aprender dos veces

On what teaching topic would I like to have professional development?

TPRS (Total Physical Response Storytelling)

I was first introduced to this method of teaching by our very own Scotty Jimenez. TPRS is different from traditional foreign language instruction since it immediately introduces vocabulary and complex sentence structures rather than starting with themed vocabulary followed by –AR verbs in the present tense. In order for students to grasp the target language in a seemingly effortless fashion, the teacher asks the story using a questioning technique known as circling.

What does this look like in the Spanish classroom? The first goal is to increase the amount of Spanish spoken in the classroom without generating class wide confusion. Asking questions and giving instructions in Spanish provided that each key term has a gesture or a noise to accompany it or using an image or a series of images to accompany key terms will help lessen confusion. In this way students associate an auditory or a visual cue with Spanish vocabulary.
